Ibibio Sound Machine – 11th November @ Gorilla

It was the first time Soundway Records Ibibio Sound Machine played Manchester and their first leg of their UK tour. The band that combine elements of West African high life, disco and pyschedelic electro soul gave us a great night out. Shame that cannot be said though of the venue or the support act (Afrika Boy) and his plugging of his album. This new venue by the owners of Kro Bar, The Deaf Institute, and The Albert Halls would be wise to invest in the quality of the sounds if they consider themselves a serious music venue. Forgetting the negatives, the main act were impressive. The band that consists a Ghanaian guitarist, Brazilian percussionist, a  horn section that doubled up on synths, drummer and bass, player fronted by British/Nigerian vocalist, were tight and visibly enjoyed showcasing their original and distinctive sound. We were treated to all their first release, self  titled album, and at to a new track (performed for the first time live), which shows no loss of  strength in their sound writing. For the Glasgow night of this tour the living legend and co-founder of Afro Beat, Tony Allen will be behind the drums, which should be something else. Great band, great musicians, performing well and enjoying it. What more can you ask for.
