Ed Motta – 3rd April @ Band On The wall

This was the first time Ed Motta had played Manchester, and he and his band (consisting of Keys and Bassist from Germany, Drummer from Germany and Guitarist from Brazil) did not disappoint. The show consisted of two sets from the big man and his band. The first contained all songs from his latest album AOR, and the second a mixture of new and old. Mr Motta presented as an assured and competent band leader, whose knowledge of music evident. He engaged the Brazilian and UK crowd throughout the set with his warming banter, and early on into the gig also made his presence felt by telling off a section of the Brazilian crowd (in Portuguese) for rudely talking whilst the band played.

Paulinho Guitarra the seasoned guitar player, whom trained with the legendary USA guitarist David T Walker (who also plays AOR), brought more out of the Mr Motta’s songs than on recorded listening. It was truly a joy to hear and see him play with this brilliant live band. The rest of the band were also musicians were of the highest calibre, all with respected solo careers, made sun deficient Manchester feel warm for a few hours with songs of great AOR song writing tinged with Brazilian flair. If you like only the best of AOR, such as Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers, do yourself a favour and pick up a copy of Mr Motta’s AOR album (Portuguese version of course!).
