Jose James – 13th April @ Band On The Wall

jose james live

There was an excitement in the crowd for this sold out gig. The support from the Leeds based JD73 was impressive. Their version of the Bob James classic Nautilus was the highlight of their set but the crowd were ready for Mr James to appear. With his band (Takuya Karoda (saxophone), Solomon Dorsey (bass/vocals), Kris Bowers (keys), and London finest Richard Spaven (drums)),
playing as tight as can be Jose James appeared and won the crowd over easily. This show was delivered by a set of musicians at the top of their game. A mixture of soul and jazz mixed with sprinkling of hip hop edge. Mr. James rich baritone voice captivated the audience through numbers off his new album “No Beginning, No End” on Blue Note Records. His interpretations on soul classics such as Bill Withers ‘ain’t no sunshine’ were equally impressive. The highlights of the show were soul based, vocal led ‘Do you feel what I feel’, the slipped beats of Richard Spaven on ‘Its All Over Your Body’, and the accapella of ‘Sword and Gun’ . Each band member shined through, but hats off to Mr Richard Spaven whose slipped beats were outstanding. He really is a leader in this field of playing. The only one drawback to the gig was the curfew, as I could of quite happily stayed to the early hours of the morning,
